Does This Really Work? Personalized Face Scrub

Scrubs work to slough off dead skin cells and help clear clogged pores, but some can be too rough on skin and shouldn’t be used every day. Beauty brand Mark seems to have taken this into consideration by creating exfoliating granules (in dry form) that are separate from the liquid cleanser. This way you can decide how rough the scrub will be by adding as many or as few granules as you's like.

Curly Qs: My First Straightening Experience

I was thirteen when I got my hair straightened for the first time. I wanted a different look for a get-together with my friends from dance class. My mom took me to her local stylist, Silvia, at a salon in Weehawken, New Jersey. She convinced us that a blowout would do the trick. She started blow-drying away as I sat there anxious and scared, not knowing what to expect. It took 40 minutes of intense heat aimed straight at my strands for Silvia to stretch out all of my tight curls. And when I finally looked in the mirror, the result was unrecognizable.

Does This Really Work: No Foundation Foundation

I’m not one to wear full on makeup on a daily basis, but I do use a little bit of tinted moisturizer sometimes for a touch of even color. I wanted to try Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation ($50, sephora.com) because it claims to be nothing like a traditional heavy foundation. Curly Qs: Bumble and Bumble Masque

As soon as the weather turns chilly, I like to treat my hair to a moisturizing mask at least once a month. It contains ultra conditioning ingredients like Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Murumuru butter and coconut oil.

Does This Really Work: Blotting Spray

I think I just found my new best friend in a skincare product! I have combination skin, so my forehead and nose get shiny throughout the day. I think the worst thing to do in this case is plop on loads of powder, which can look cakey and lead to clogged pores. I usually go for blotting papers, but I just tried Cosmedicine Medi-Matte Oil Control Spray ($35, cosmedicine.com) and my shiny patches vanished in a flash.

Curly Qs: Curls at the Alma Awards

Waves and curls were out in full bloom at last week’s Alma Awards. They proved to be the trend of the night. And it was such a treat to see Latina celebrities showcasing textured hair in different ways. These are my top three favorite styles:

I hardly recognized Brazilian beauty Jordana Brewster, who pulled back her signature shaggy bangs and sported flowing bohemian waves.

Does This Really Work: Peel-Off Polish

Sula’s Paint & Peel Sula Collection ($10, sulabeauty.com) consists of nail polish shades that easily shed off nails without using remover. I painted my nails with Modern Mauve—a bright violet shade—that goes on like regular polish. You need two coats to get even coverage. If you don’t put on a topcoat, though, the water-based formula starts to peel at the edges as soon as it dries.
