ACLU Claims Homeland Security is Illegally Seizing Laptops At Border

People crossing into the United States do not just get their suitcases searched for potentially suspicious or dangerous contents.

Some people are also getting their laptops searched – and for no apparent reason, a civil rights group is alleging.

The American Civil Liberties Union said the documents released by the federal government on Monday suggest the Homeland Security Department seizes and searches electronic devices at the border without showing reasonable suspicion of a crime or getting a judge's approval.

The number of middle and high school students trying electronic cigarettes has doubled since last year according to the first large national study looking at use within that age group.

About 2 percent of students said they’d used an e-cigarette in the previous month, according to a survey done last year. This is up from 1 percent in 2011.

More kids still smoke traditional cigarettes than the new electronic ones, and it's not clear how dangerous e-cigarettes are. It's also not clear from the report how many are using them on a daily or weekly basis.

Facebook Murderer Derek Medina Pleads Not Guilty, Trial Set For November

A man accused of killing his wife and then posting a confession and a bloody picture of her body on Facebook has pleaded not guilty in Florida.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Derek Medina fatally shot 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso at their South Miami townhome earlier this month. A judge on Thursday set a tentative trial date of Nov. 4.

Medina is charged with second-degree murder, but The Miami Herald reports prosecutors will likely seek a first-degree murder indictment when the grand jury returns in September.

Researchers announced Thursday a rare discovery of a new mammal species called the olinguito. And its teddy bear face makes it instantly adorable.

The raccoon-sized critter leaps through the trees of mountainous forests of Ecuador and Colombia, but it shouldn't have been too hard to find — one of them lived in the Smithsonian-run National Zoo in the Washington for a year.

"It's been kind of hiding in plain sight for a long time" despite its extraordinary beauty, said Kristofer Helgen, the Smithsonian's curator of mammals.

Non-English Speakers Can Be Jurors in New Mexico

New Mexico's top court ruled that citizens in the heavily Hispanic state who don't speak English still have the right to serve on a jury.

The New Mexico Supreme Court cautioned  trial courts and lawyers on Monday that this is in fact a right enshrined in the state constitution to all people, even non-English speakers.

The court issued the admonition in a unanimous ruling that upholds an Albuquerque man's convictions for murder and other crimes in the 2004 bludgeoning death of his girlfriend and a subsequent armed robbery and stabbing.
