It's a proud day for Latinos!! Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old woman from the Bronx who ran on the platform of Medicare for All, Fully Funded Public Schools & Universities, Justice System Reform, and Immigrant Justice, has beat out a 10-term Democrat veteran, Joe Crowley, in the party’s congressional primary in New York’s primarily minority 14th Congressional District.
While Crowley is double Cortez’s age he did not receive half of the votes his opponent did, with Cortez receiving 57.5% of the votes, which was hard to believe - even for Cortez.
Just before her shocking victory, Cortez, a former Bernie Sanders organizer for his presidential campaign, was being referred to as nothing more than the “Primary opponent of Gov. Cuomo and Rep. Crowley set to endorse each other.” In response, Castro fired back with twitter posts saying “A Girl Has No Name: Headlines from the Political Patriarchy,” and "Our names are @CynthiaNixon and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and we are coming for you ¡Coño!" referring to some journalists still refusing to say her name.
Now, you would be hard pressed to find an news outlet that does not utter her name. In an interview with CNN, Castro said, "We won because we organized. We won because I think we had a very clear, winning message and we took that message to doors that had never been knocked on before. We spoke to communities that had typically been, I think, dismissed and they responded."
Her win has far reaching effects as Crowley was rumored to be the Democrat that would take Nancy Pelosi’s place in leading the Democrats. Cortez is shaking up the establishment unapologetically and leading the way for more millennial candidates to come into the political landscape. She will now face Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November mid-terms, and we wish her nothing but the best of luck. Pa' lante!
