Celia, who was already a major star in the Cuban orchestra group Sonora Matancera, fled from Cuba with her husband, Pedro Knight, after Fidel Castro’s regime took power. A few years after arriving to the U.S., Celia and maestro Tito Puente pioneered the Latin music boom of the 1970’s. She was the first Latina to headline at Carnegie Hall alongside the Puerto Rican icon.
